The work flows in classical plant breeding have altered dramatically over the past 25 years. Biotechnical procedures, such as marker-assisted selection, in-vitro culture and double haploid technology have been developed and are now routinely integrated in classical breeding operations. In many cases they help to reduce the time needed to develop a new variety.

Our biotechnology laboratories, with their respective greenhouses, are located at our Schlanstedt site. This is where we select phenotype and marker-assisted sugar beet plants, after exposing them to pathogens under standardised conditions. And it is here that our DH laboratory for wheat is located, in which we create double haploid lines with the assistance of additional crosses.
